![]() ![]() It's reasonable for beholders to hole up in a cave by themselves and attack passing adventurers as a random encounter. ![]() This gives D&D DMs immense leeway with how they use beholders. The iconic D&D villain Xanathar functions perfectly well leading a thieves' guild that forces him to interact with other species daily. They don't have to exterminate all lesser beings on sight or refuse to work with others. ![]() In most cases, however, a D&D beholder can act cautiously, patiently, or even reasonably. The DM rolls dice to randomly determine which beam fires at a target, even when firing as a Legendary Action. D&D 5e makes this randomness one of the beholders' defining features. The DM chooses the beams it fires on its turn, but not those fired at creatures who start their turn close by. The D&D 3e beholder ups the ante by using all of its eye stalks instead of a selection of them.ĭ&D 4e is when the beholder first begins firing random eye stalks. Early versions of the beholder, such as in Greyhawk or AD&D 2e, don't mention randomness. In particular, they've become far more random and unpredictable, even for the DM. Mechanically, beholders have changed significantly over time. This has seen their lore explode from Dungeons & Dragons and AD&D First Edition, with AD&D 2e being responsible for the vast majority of their physiological and psychological quirks. They have gone from just another monster in Dungeons & Dragons' Greyhawk to adorning the front cover of D&D 5e's Monster Manual. It's unknown how beholders reached the Prime Material Plane from their home.īeholders have only increased in prominence throughout D&D's editions. Fellow Far Realm inhabitants include other D&D aberrations like Aboleths. They come from the Far Realm, a strange nonsensical dimension full of alien beings. Unlike most D&D monsters, beholders do not hail from the Prime Material Plane or any other plane around it. Many fights involving beholders, particularly between each other, come down to attempting to bite their enemies to death. But it also nullifies their own eye beams, their most versatile tool for killing foes. Their central eye projects an antimagic cone that shuts down most adventurers' most dangerous abilities. Xanathar's other notable quirk is his adoration for Sylgar, a goldfish he is singularly incapable of keeping alive.ĭespite the threat they present, beholders' iconic D&D weapons work against them. This is most prominent in the infamous Xanathar, a D&D beholder who runs a thieves' guild. Many of them are able to work with other races, even if they cannot accept anything other than a leadership position. Sequelitis: Succession was not well received by fans of the first season. To top it all off, they’ve been doing it for years. They work for a Black Ops-esque group with inhuman abilities, who’ve been enacting these atrocities in the hopes of drawing out the progenitor of their species (or rather, his clone). Now, imagine this: the perpetrators behind the skinnings and the poison gas aren’t random run-of-the-mill psychopaths.Nightmare Fuel: The brutality shown in the series can be very unnerving at times, with special mention going for episode 3, showing the discovery of the real poison gas being found alongside two bodies with the skins hanging in the wall with nails alongside bloody writings.Later on, in a very uncomfortable moment, Gilbert actually does feel Lily up, even going so far as to compare how she feels to Erika. Harsher in Hindsight: In the second episode, in a brief bit of levity, there's a moment where Lily, stuck in a crowd, verbally lambasts whoever just felt her up, threatening to arrest them. There, Gilbert reveals his involvement in the institute's destruction and Erika's death before he tries to kill Lily, forcing Keith to kill him. Eager to break Keith and make him stoop to his level of brutality, he lures Keith into the institute and mocks him over Erika's death. He proceeds to kills 37 women who look similar to Erika, and covers up crimes committed by Market Maker (a corrupt Black Ops organization led by Minatsuki) to the point of having Jean Henry Richard brainwashed to attack Bran and then commit suicide in front of Keith. When he finds out she loves her adopted brother romantically, he vivisects and slices her into bits before tossing her remains over the mountain and framing a Reggie (a demihuman bred to kill) for the crime. After this, he goes to college with Keith and becomes obsessed with Keith's adoptive sister Erika. This lie led Minatsuki to betray the school and kill Heath Flick (Keith Flick's father and the headmaster of Jaula Blanca) as well as almost every child in the institute. Seeking to destroy his father's legacy, he lies to Minatsuki that he'd used as spare parts for Koku (one of two perfect progenitor clones). In a flashback, Gilbert resents his father's growing sympathy for children being raised to be super soldiers in the Jaula Blanca Institute and kills him. ![]() The songs of Schwanengesang as found in Schubert's manuscript: The Seidl song, "Die Taubenpost", has no connection to the rest of the cycle and was appended by Haslinger at the end to round up all of Schubert's last compositions. It was customary for Schubert to respect the poet's sequence the manuscript may not represent Schubert's desired order. 8–13, as they appear in the manuscript, differs from that of the poems as Heine published them: 10, 12, 11, 13, 9, 8, which in any case were not consecutive, as the table below shows. We can assume, then, that Schubert, at least in the beginning, intended two separate single-poet collections. On 2 October 1828, after the manuscript had been written, Schubert offered the Heine set of six songs to a Leipzig publisher by the name of Probst. (The true cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Die Winterreise had sold well, motivating the publisher.) The title Schwanengesang is not of course the composer's but all the song titles are Heine, for one, did not name his poems. The Rellstab and Heine settings were copied in a single sitting on consecutive pages of the manuscript in Schubert's hand, and Seidl's Die Taubenpost is considered to be Schubert's last Lied - thus the basis for Haslinger's sequence, one accepted by posterity together with his conceit that a cycle exists at all. In any case, all 14 songs were composed in 1828 and the collection was published in 1829, a few months after the composer's death. Seven texts by Ludwig Rellstab (1799–1860) are followed by six by Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) inclusion of the last song, to words by Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804–1875), may or may not reflect Schubert's wishes. Named by its first publisher, Tobias Haslinger, who presumably wished to present it as Schubert's last testament, Schwanengesang differs from the earlier Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise song-cycles by including settings of more than one poet. The autograph manuscript of the collection is preserved in the Morgan Library & Museum. However, the left remained intact which led to the nickname for this level as "The Split Screen Level" (see video below). ![]() ![]() In Pacman this meant that the right side of the screen became jarbled. Naturally, the biggest number formed with 2 digits in our decimal system is of course 99. Naturally the maximum hex that could be formed would be FF or 255 (remember in Zelda how you could only get 255 rupies?). Data was commonly stored as a byte which could hold two hexadecimal digits. 0-9 followed by A-F which adds up to 16 digits. This led to a hexadecimal system for video game data instead of decimal. The goal was always to use as little as possible. Nerd Version: See at the dawn of video games, everything was about memory. It caught everyone by surprise and even the so called experts overlooked Pac-Man while reviewing arcade games (don't the experts always do things like that?). Renamed to Pac-Man in the US, it became an instant hit. Nobody had ever seen a game like it before. Namco and Iwatani may have developed "Puck Man" in Japan, but it was Midway who marketed to the United States and saw sales fly through the roof. Strangely enough, it was NOT a big success after launch. After a short 18 months, the game was complete and launched as "Puck Man". This odd sounding name (odd only because it's not English of course) is symbolic of the noise made when one opens and closes their mouth rapidly. Iwatani drew inspiration for his game via a famous Japanese phrase known as "Paku-Paku Taberu". Toru Iwatani designed the game over the short time of 18 months (yeah back then one guy could write a game on his own, imagine that today?).
